Chapter Twelve

‘Stay still,’ says Maggie, as she dabs some more ointment on the bruises across my back. I rear at her touching, but a soothing hand goes across my neck as well, easing me down. I’m sitting with my shirt off in the main cabin of Craigantlet, Maggie working away at my back while I’m being watched by Jenny Carnegie. She’s giving me eyes that say, ‘That looks painful’, and it’s like she’s trying to sympathize, but I’m not buying it. But I smile when she looks across trying to feign some sort of camaraderie and thanks.

‘So, it’s just kids then,’ she says. ‘These kids just came round and beat him up; it seems a bit extreme that they’re running these things.’

‘It was definitely kids—maybe nineteen to twenty—but why beat up a hotel owner here? It’s also empty and there’s really little to gain from it for them.’

‘Did you get to look at any of them?’ asks Maggie.

‘No, they were all masked, I couldn’t see faces. The owner’s gone to the hospital as well, but I don’t think he’s going to talk; something was scaring him, scaring him bad.’

‘Maybe you could try McAvoy again,’ says Jenny Carnegie. ‘I know what he did to me; maybe he’s involved. What’d you think?’

‘I haven’t got a lot of links for that,’ I say. ‘I really could do with finding out about these hoodlums and what’s going on there.’

‘Well, I’ve got someone I know in the police,’ says Jenny. ‘Maybe you could talk to him, share what you know with him.’

‘How do you know him?’ I ask.

‘Used to be an old flame.’

‘Did you not go about all the stuff has been happening to you?’

She shakes her head, ‘No, I was too scared but you could put it to him; you could talk about McAvoy with him, keep my name out of it in case anything comes back to McAvoy. What do you think?’ she says. She leans over towards me, showing some cleavage and I can feel Maggie’s press on my back getting that little bit stronger. The woman tries to use every charm she’s got to wangle me into the path she wants me to go. I reckon it’s a path I want to follow to find out what she’s really playing at, but Maggie’s not going to take well to it.

‘Give me his name and his number and I’ll get in contact,’ I say and sure enough, there’s a press on my back of ointment that’s a lot stronger than it should be.

‘Are you done yet, Maggie?’ I say, and then comes another hard press on my back. ‘I need to get changed. You probably could as well.’

Maggie’s stressed as it is and unlike me who’s been involved in a bit of a scuffle, she looks fine. But I can sense her wondering why I’m telling her she should be getting dressed. I look up at Jenny and say, ‘If you can give us a moment?’ before taking Maggie’s hand and leading her through to the bunk room.
